ZOMBA: Chancellor College academic staff this Friday hold special celebrations marking a victorious end to a vicious academic freedom war. The ‘big red day’ will be held on campus in Zomba.
“The struggle for academic freedom is part of history at our institution therefore we have all the reasons to celebrate the victory,” said outspoken Acting Chancellor College Academic staff Union president Dr. Jessie Kabwila Kapasula.
Dr Kapasula further said they have lined up a number of activities marking the triumphant end of the academic freedom battle.
“Among others, we will hold a last walk Dr Blessings Chinsinga walked for interrogation before assembling at the Academic Freedom Park within Chancellor College campus. We will then hold a press conference to explain our understanding of the Chancellor College opening,” she explained.
Thereafter, according to Dr Kabwila Kapasula, the lecturers will wine and dine in celebration of their resilience to win the battle against academic freedom against government.
The celebration comes two weeks after President Mutharika bowed down to the lecturers demands, ordering the university to reopen after an eight month closure.
The academic freedom saga started when Police Chief Peter Mukhito summoned lecturer Blessings Chinsinga to interrogate him over allegations that he incited students to revolt against government over fuel shortage and other economic hardships.
The saga turned ugly when students booed the President during the last graduation ceremony when he spit fire at the lecturers branding them as confusionists.
But to the embarrassment of the President, the students sided with the lecturers and started booing the President whenever he spoke ill of the President. - Zodiak Online
