Malawi Music Awards 2011 nominees

Best Malawian musicians will on June 24 be awarded for the great work they are doing in entertaining the nation. The award ceremony, organized by incmedia, will be taking place at a venue which is yet to be announced.

 

An elite group of all media representatives was convened, called the Nominations Council and tasked to come up with names of possible nominees for different categories/genres of the Malawian Music Awards 2011. The criteria: Originality, quality of production, popularity – air play/requests, among others.

 

The following are the nominees for the Malawi Music Awards 2011.

BEST REGGAE: Black Missionaries, Mafunyeta,  Lucius Banda , Skeffa Chimoto and Anthony Makondetsa.

BEST R&B: Lulu, Maskal, Dan Lu, Theo Thompson & Team Gypsy and Tigris

BEST HIP HOP: Young K, Tay Grin, Third Eye, Barry One and Nameless.

BEST LOCAL: Simon & Kendall, Wilson Mwase, Lawrence Mbenjere, Thomas Chibade and Moses Makawa.

BEST FOLKLORE: Giddes Chalamanda, Waliko Makhala, Chikowa,  The Roots and Lucky Stars.

BEST GOSPEL: Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Ndirande Anglican Voices, Wambali Mkandawire, Grace Chinga Moffat and Lloyd Phiri.

BEST ACCOUSTIC: Mawanga, Ben Mankhamba,  Edgar & Davis, Fumbi River Jazz Band and Agorosso.

BEST FEMALE: Tigris, Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Grace Chinga Moffat,  Wendy Harawa and Rina.

BEST MALE: Lucius Banda, Dan Lu, Skeffa Chimoto, Maskal and Ben Mankhamba.

BEST SESSION ARTIST: DJ Sonye, Joseph Tembo, Dare Devils, Colin Ali and Donald Custom.

BEST GROUP: Ndirande Anglican Voices, Black Missionaries, Zembani Band, Groove Magic and Mizati.

BEST MUSIC PRODUCER: Taps Bandawe, Ralph Ching’amba, Nd’efeyo Entertainment, Q Malewezi and Dominant One.

BEST MUSIC PROMOTER: Zembani, Black Rhyno, Jai Banda, PSI and Chibuku Products.

LIFETIME ACHIEVER AWARD: Lucius Banda, Giddess Chilamanda, Mjura Mkandawire and
Flora Jolly Makonyola

The organizers will soon invite the general public to vote through SMS  for the artist they feel is deserving of an award.

Other categories still being worked on include Best Video – to be nominated by the general public, best artist involved in corporate social responsibility and another special category by the Music Association Malawi.

Nyasa Times understands that an auditing firm will be used to verify the results from the voting process.

There will be special performances of selected artists through out the show.
