Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Navicha says government will increase the number of social cash transfer beneficiaries and the amount of money they receive.

She said this after visiting some social cash transfer beneficiaries in Dedza on Tuesday, saying the monthly K2, 600 is not enough considering the current cost of living.

“The programme has helped people a lot. For example, beneficiaries are able to build modern houses buy farm inputs, pay fees for their children, and buy food," Navicha said.

She added that government is planning to start paying the beneficiaries through E-payment.

Director of Infrastructure and Economic Development at National Local Government Finance Committee, Mr. Paul Chipeta, said 123, 000 people are benefiting from the programme in 11 districts of the country.

One of the beneficiaries, Dolophina Ngwanda, said the programme has enabled her to construct a modern house, adding that she is also able to access better asthma treatment since she is able to afford transport fare to and from the district hospital.
