Access to Clean Water Still a Challenge in Rumphi

30 percent of people in Rumphi have no access to safe and clean water, the district water office has said.

District water officer, Vincent Chipembere has told Zodiak Online that as a result these communities are forced to access water in unprotected sources like rivers, risking their lives to water-borne diseases like Cholera.

``Most affected areas are, Mwazisi, Chitimba, Thazima, Kamphenda, and Thunduwike where apart from water being a scares resource, the commodity is also salty, not good for human consumption, said Chipembere.

Rumphi district has a population of 243, 117.

Added Chipembere, we have a population of 243,117, and out of these 72,000 have no access to safe water.

Explained Chipembere, ``the most affected people are in rural areas of the district because some have settled in high places where drilling boreholes is not possible and pipe water cannot reach them.”

Executive director for Malawi Health Equity Network George Jobe who is also the chairperson of Universal Health Coverage Coalition has suggested that the district council should encourage people to use chlorine as an immediate solution.

"The council should ensure communities are using treated water in all areas to avoid cholera outbreak and other related diseases, advised Jobe".

Jobe added that the council should also put more resources into water development in order to allow people to use safe water.

The district has five thousand, five hundred and fifteen water points.
