REPSSI, YWCAM Urge Govt to Support Caregivers

The Regional Psycho Social Initiative (REPSSI) has encouraged government to professionalize the field of caregivers amid ongoing reports of lack of permanent incentives to motivate them in their work.

REPSSI Country Representative George Alufandika says caregivers play a crucial role in scaling up early development of children hence the need to lessen financial challenges that they are experiencing.

“For a long time, caregivers have been complaining of lack of incentives in the course of their work, so, we encourage government to professionalize the field of caregivers,” said Alufandika.

He is of the view that provision of permanent incentives to volunteer caregivers can motivate them to work hard.

District Social Welfare Officer for Blantyre Stephano Joseph says the government is planning to first train and provide honoraria to mentors before implementing the same to all caregivers across the country.

“Government will first provide incentives to mentors who will have the role of monitoring community-based child care centres to ensure that CBCCs are providing relevant services to children of ages between three to five years,” explained Stephano.

The two made the sentiments in Blantyre on Friday during the refresher training of caregivers organized by Repssi and Young Women Christian Association of Malawi, where one caregiver, Rabson Acidi from Yamikani centre in Machinga asked parents to send their children of between three to five years to community child care centers.
