12 primary schools in Phalombe have been awarded textbooks for their outstanding performance in readmitting learners that dropped out of school, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic-induced school holiday.

Acting Executive Director for Education Expertise Development Fund (EEDF), Prescot Thawe, told Zodiak Online on Wednesday that through the project, 2,300 learners have gone back to school in four educational zones of Mitekete, Mpasa, Mulomba, and Nambiro.

Thawe said schools that managed to bring back to school a good number of learners have been given textbooks.

"After the Covid-19 induced school holiday it was revealed that Phalombe was one of the districts which registered a high number of learners who dropped out of school," said Thawe.

He attributed the success to the good working relationships among local structures such as mother groups, community policing forums, and local leaders.

Primary Education Advisor (PEA) for Mpasa zone, Stella Golosi Chinthenga, said the textbooks will greatly assist in the provision of quality education in the zone.

Chinthenga said the shortage of textbooks for standards five to eight has hit schools in the district and the initiative will address the problem.

Meanwhile, Group Village Head Man Namasoko has lauded stakeholders for their coordination to help learners to go back to school.

The project is being implemented with financial support from the Start Small foundation through Care Malawi.
