Court Sends Four to the Gallows for Albino Killing

A High Court judge has ordered four people hanged in Malawi and four others a life time in jail for the killing of a 21-year-old woman with albinism in April 2016.

Judge Chifundo Kachale said the murder of Enelesi Nkhata, was a grave issue as she was maimed alive by her assailants and left for dead in her home village in Mchinji district.

Boniface Massa, Country Director for Standing Voice, an organisation which advocates for rights of people with albinism in Malawi has hailed the verdict as one that sends strong warning to would-be-offenders.

“People with albinism in the country have suffered a lot of attacks which have always left them cornered and living in fear.
“With this verdict, we are now assured of the strong warning it will send to would-be-offenders,” said Massa.

Judge Kachale has thus given Gerlad Phiri, Medson Madzialenga, Jameson Baluwa and Steven Chingombe the death sentence for murder and transacting in human tissue.

The other four, Isaac Phiri, Mcdonald Kanyerere, Damiano Phiri, Isaac Msambalume and Damson Manyani have been handed life imprisonment on charges of transacting in human tissue.

Execution of the death sentence will await the signature of president of Malawi as the law states.

No president of Malawi after 1994 has authorised effect of the death penalty.

And in a related development, two suspects in the murder of a Dedza boy with albinism Goodson Fanizo have been acquitted while the remaining two suspects will be sentenced in January 2020.

The country is yet to find answers on the death of one of the suspects in the case Buleya Lule who died in Police custody at Area 3 police in Lilongwe.
