As most roads remain cut off in the southern region, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has asked well-wishers and development partners to support Malawi with more helicopters to urgently supply food aid to survivors of Cyclone Freddy.

Bushiri told journalists in Chiradzulu on Tuesday that the flood survivors are in dire need of food and swift measures have to be applied as most areas are still inaccessible.

“The country needs more helicopters for rescue operations and ferrying relief items to people. Flood survivors have to be supported with food and there is a need to act fast,” he said.

He further explained that apart from assisting the 700 families that he adopted in Juma area in Mulanje with food items, he will also help the people to move out from the camps and build back better.

This comes when the helicopter which Bushiri has hired has started ferrying food items from strategic centres of Nsedi admarc and Milepa in Chiradzulu to the affected housedholds in the area of Traditional authority Juma in Mulanje district.

Mulanje district council chairperson Thokozani Namoyo and Mulanje West parliamentarian Yusuf Nthenda have thanked Bushiri for the assistance while asking others to emulate the gesture.

This comes when several individuals, organizations and companies including Malawi Gaming and Lottery Authority and National Economic Empowerment Fund have reached out to various flood survivors in Blantyre, Mulanje Phalombe and other districts in the southern region.

Cyclone Freddy has killed more than 500 people in Malawi.
