COMMUNITIES DEMAND TRANSFER OF HEALTH WORKERS

Communities around Jenda health center in Malawis northern region district of Mzimba have demanded the removal of health workers at the facility accusing

them of negligence when attending to pregnant mothers in labor

Their negligence is said to have resulted into an unqualified person Joyce Ndhlovu making deliveries at the facility and has made 11 live deliveries with one dying

"I was elected chairperson of the women guiding their pregnant daughters at the health center so when the nurses were away I was indeed delivering babies ",the woman told Zodiak Online

She emphasized that she was conducting deliveries because the nurses were leaving the women unattended to

"Now that authorities have chased us from the health center we are now at Katete mission hospital",said Ndhlovu

This has prompted other women also to leave the facility and follow
her to Katete mission hospital 10 kilometers away

"Authorities should just transfer the health workers there as this has been going on for a long time now",said Mrs Catherine Mwamlima

Mzimba health spokesperson Raymond Kawaye has admitted that the woman was doing this illegally at night

"The woman was doing this at night so as management we have chased
away the woman and unfortunately other women have followed her", said Kawaye

He however said they will investigate complaints of negligence to arrive to the root cause.

"But we have cautioned the health workers and beefed up the staff with additional workers",said Kawaye

The issue has also caught the attention Malawi Carer who took up the matter with district health authorities
