Malawian teachers from public schools have joined the on-going civil servants strike, according a joint statement signed Monday by Teachers Union of Malawi Secretary General and Civil Servants Trade Union President.

The joining of the teachers is likely to worsen the strike especially with reports that public health workers are also set to join.

Meanwhile, the civil servants are threatening to march on the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) on Wednesday to present their grievances.

“The situation now is that all civil servants are on strike and on Wednesday we are marching to the OPC to deliver a petition to the Chief Secretary Mr. Bright Msaka,” said CSTU president Elijah Kamphinda Banda.

The civil servants are demanding a 67 per cent salary increment but our sources say government is willing to negotiate by offering 25 percent.

“You see our wage bill currently is K92 billion per year and if we offer what they are demanding then that will come to about K210 billion per year and government doesn’t have that capacity,” said the source.

Meanwhile it remains to be seen how all this will play out as government also fights to put the economy back on track.—Zodiak Online
