In The Daily Times today, Monday, July 12, 2010, the front page carries a story on the impending xenophobia attacks in South Africa that has threatened life of people.

Sam Banda writes that some Malawians are contemplating leaving South Africa this month amid speculations that there will be xenophobia attacks after the World Cup which ended last night.

Several Malawians who patronized shows by the Black Missionaries in Pretoria and Johannesburg last week said they were living in fear while others have revealed plans to return home.

Still on the front page, Dickson Kashoti writes that Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Lin Songtian is expected to leave the country next month after his term of office expires.

Speaking in an interview with the paper, Ambassador Songtian said he would be leaving on August 10, 2010 just three months after President Bingu wa Mutharika singled him out as one of the key people who helped construct the magnificent Parliament building in Lilongwe.

He expressed sadness that he is leaving Malawi describing Malawians as hard working and humble.

On fourth page of the Daily Times, the Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) has exposed flaws in the 2010/2011 health sector budget when it presented its findings of the health budget analysis.

The flaws include dwindling budget allocations towards the health sector and misallocation of financial resources, dwindling health financial per capita, over dependence of donor funding towards HIV and Aids and huge resource allocation to Capitol Hill to fixed resources.

Human Rights Conservative Committee (HRCC) Executive Director Mr. Mabvuto Bamusi, whose body partnered with MHEM in the budget analysis, made the remarks saying Malawi was on a declining trend in the health allocation sector budgetary allocation.

In business news, Malawi could save on forex if more cross border transport business was offered to local operators thereby strengthening the country’s economy, a senior representative of the sector has said.

Road Transport Operators Association Executive Director Mr. Shadreck Matsinde said at a press conference in Blantyre on Thursday that Malawi was losing millions of Dollars to service freight bills on clearing agents based across the borders, an observation government has acknowledged.

In sport, Leonard Sharra writes that Civo United extended their lead at the top of TNM Super league chart after beating Blue Eagles 1-0 in an entertaining match at Silver Stadium on Saturday.

The all important goal for the match came eight minutes into the second half from Frank Banda who controlled a pass from Joseph Kachule before slotting home with his left foot.

With the win, the civil servants shot to 14 points from seven games , three ahead of second placed Bullets FC who have a two game cushion.

On the front page of the Daily Times today on Monday, 5 July 2010, Wezzie Nkhoma Nsomba writes that United Democratic Front (UDF) district urban committee has dragged the former rulling party to the High Court for dissolving the committee and imposing a K2,000.00 nomination fee for candidates in the party's forth coming district elections without approval of the National Executive Committee.

according to court documents dated July 1, 2010, the committee is asking the court to order and declare whether the party's working committee has the powers to dissolve the district committee or merely to make recommendations to NEC.

The Blantyre district committee is also asking the court to declare whether UDF's working committee has powers to impose K2,000 nomination fee for candidates without approval of NEC.

 UDF Secretary General Kenedy Makwangwala confirmed about the fee saying it is enshrined in the party's constitution and that he money will not go into the party coffers but rather given back to to districts for the day to day running of the structures.

Still on the front page of the Daily Times newspaper, the paper writes that the Anti Corruption Bureau - ACB - will remit over 40million Kwacha to Mahomed Munif Al-Nadhi owner of Keza Office Park who bought the property from former president Bakili Muluzi.

Keza Office Park was among the propertie that the ACB seized as part of Muluzi assests despite that it was sold off to Al-Nadhi.

On the second page of the Daily Times, Sylvia Mwawa writes that government and other non governmental organizations in the country need to reward hardworking staff in the health sector to boost quality health services, Head of Medicines Sans Frontiers-Belgium Marielle Bemelmans said.

Bemelmans said health workers, especially those in rural areas, need to be appreciated for their work in different ways like giving them awards in order to encourage them to work hard.
