Ministry of Health (MoH) says it is working to construct 55 new health posts across the country worth K13 billion courtesy of the Global Fund and Malawi Government.

The portfolio’s minister, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda made the revelation on the sidelines of a press briefing held Wednesday at the Central Office of Information in Lilongwe.

The minister said the 55 new health posts will be constructed in various places in rural areas to ensure that people do not travel long distances to access health services.

She said out of the funding for the project, about K9 billion will come from Malawi Government while K4 billion will be from the Global Fund.

The ministry will also construct offices for Public Health Institute of Malawi (PHIM), according to the minister.

“My ministry has also been working on improving health infrastructure in Malawi such as construction of a National Cancer Centre (in Lilongwe) which is currently providing chemotherapy services to patients.

“We are also constructing infectious diseases centres in Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre and tenders for the projects are underway,” explained Chiponda.

During the press briefing, the minister also highlighted key updates on the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA) which took place from 22nd to 28th May, this year in Geneva under the theme: “Health for Peace, Peace for Health”.

She said during the assembly, member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) agreed that the world needs a stronger, empowered and sustainably-financed World Health Organization.

Among the five WHO priorities in the next five years, according to the minister, include: promoting health by addressing root causes of various diseases and providing health services by reorienting health systems towards primary health care as the foundation of universal health coverage.
