5 Arrested In Anti-Chizuma Protests

Five members of the “Mbadwa Zokhudzidwa za Malawi”, a grouping of anti-Martha Chizuma protesters have been arrested as they marched their way to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) offices in Lilongwe.

The grouping planned to seal ACB offices as they continue pushing for either the resignation or firing of the Director, Martha Chizuma.

National Police spokesperson, Harry Namwaza told Zodiak, the five include two lead organisers of the protests, Redson Munlo and Agape Khombe.

Their arrests according to Namwaza is on charges bordering around conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

“Their letter did not show that they will proceed to seal the office, we had to assess the security situation and this is why we thought that they couldn’t proceed,” said Namwaza.

Namwaza went on to say that the grouping was advised to seek another clearance to proceed to the ACB offices but this was defied.

“We advised them to seek another clearance but they wanted to proceed and its when we arrested the five,” he added.

The five members were arrested at the expiry of a seven-day vigil, the grouping has been holding at the Kamuzu Mausoleum in Lilongwe.
