FPAM Takes Family Planning Services to Storm Ana Hit Areas

The Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) says the January Tropical Storm Ana disaster revealed several challenges that hinder women and adolescent girls from accessing family planning services.

FPAM Communications and Advocacy Officer Faith Kadzanja told Zodiak Online that long distances to health facilities that offer family planning services and basic education on family planning top the list of challenges.

She said this is the reason FPAM is continuing providing family planning services to women in disaster hit areas months after the Storm Ana disaster.

“With support from United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), we are implementing a Tropical Cyclone Ana Humanitarian project through the delivery of essential health services of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and general medical care to displaced populations,” said Kadzanja.

Kadzanja said FPAM is implementing the project in Mulanje, Chikwawa and Nsanje through their respective District Health Offices.

“Basically the interventions include support for mobile outreach clinics, support for procurement of supplies to support the mobile outreach clinics, support for bi-weekly health cluster meetings in the three districts, and monthly supportive supervision by the secretariat and the district teams,” said Kadzanja.

Yamikani Manyera spent two months at Mbunumbu evacuation camp and she told Zodiak Online that while at the camp they were receiving different services on family planning from nurses and this did not stop though they are out of the camp.

“FPAM has been giving us services like condoms and injections in and outside the camps and for this, we are very thankful,” said Manyera.

Village Headman Mbunumbu said health facilities are far from the area and during rainy season, organizations seldom visit the area because of its waterlogged status and it is always muddy.

“We are surrounded by water and health facilities are far from us. FPAM has been our true health partner because apart from family planning services, they are also providing us with other medical services,” said VH Mbunumbu.

According to Faith Kadzanja, the humanitarian support started in April and will run up to the month of August 2022.
