On Saturday, former students of Umbwi came back to their secondary school to help plant trees around the campus at a time the property is threatened with encroachment.

Chairperson of the school alumni, Isaac Malunga, told Zodiak Online that the group aims to enhance support for the school and also its members in times of need.

“As former students of Umbwi, we came here to plant trees…and observe the challenges that students are facing so that we can help too,” said Malunga adding that his group is that of 1999 to 2002.

Meanwhile, students at Umbwi Secondary school have asked well-wishers to assist the school with beds, desks and also address water problem at boys’ hostels.

According to the students, for years now both taps and showers at the boys’ hostels are not working.

“The situation at the boys’ hostels is bad. There is no water for some time now. There is shortage of beds too. Two or three students share one bed,” said one student adding that some classrooms have inadequate desks and students sit on the bare floor.

Fredrick Tsitsi another former student of the school said the group would look at how best they can address the challenges the school is going through.

Meanwhile, chairperson of the Wildlife Committee at the school, Gillion Chiomba, called on well-wishers to help construct a fence around the compass to protect it further from people who are encroaching.
