Energy and agriculture experts in the country have called for a revamped bio-based fertilizer and energy production as a solution to challenges in agriculture and electricity sectors.

Energy expert, Grain Malunga says the country has a lot of wastes which can be used to generate biogas energy same as creating job opportunities to people.

Malunga says if well utilized, the deposited wastes can help in the production of biogas energy which could be used in rural areas in line with Malawi's energy policy.

He has called on government through its environmental department to work with the private sector in areas of wastes management.

"We have wastes dumped in towns and rural markets which we can utilize in the production of biogas energy for the rural majority," said Malunga.

"Local council should work with private sector if this is to be realized," he added.

Meanwhile, an agriculture expert, Ron Chilumpha says lack of information among farmers due to unavailability of a vibrant extension system is affecting production of biomass fertilizers and manure, which if dealt with, it can reduce Affordable Inputs Programme beneficiaries.

"Agriculture ministry should pump resources in its extension department as you know that there is knowledge gap among the farmers on Biogass residue fertilizer, noted Chilumpha.

Chilumpha says if farmers are well trained on such fertilizers and manure, it would ease the pressure on Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP).

Statics show that less than 15 percent of Malawi’s population have electricity, and the Afford Inputs Programme accounts for 40 percent of Malawi’s agriculture budget.
