Minister of local government and rural development, Professor Blessings Chinsinga, indicated that government is overwhelmed with the disputes that courts are failing to resolve since they are grounded in cultures.

"As a minister what I am proposing is to establish a Council of Paramount Chiefs which I believe should help us to sort out these disputes because the legal option is not assisting as much as we had hoped.

"So, we are hoping that if we have alternative dispute resolution mechanism grounded in traditions and culture, perhaps that could help to scale down the number of chieftaincy disputes," Professor Chinsinga said.

After installing Traditional Authority Thukuta (Anderson Jonathan) of Thyolo, Chinsinga commended the chieftaincy for being peaceful in choosing successors since its existence from 1935.

Speaking on behalf of chiefs in the district, Senior Chief Thomas, said Thukuta chieftaincy is a classic example of peace in the country.

The traditional leader said lack of following proper chieftaincy lineage when choosing successors is a cause for most of the wrangles.

"As Mang'anja, we follow a family lineage when choosing a successor to the fallen chief. Everyone knows who is next. This is why there is always peace in this tribe," he said.

Meanwhile, both the minister and senior chief have advised the newly installed Mang'anja traditional leader to sustain the legacy, work with government, desist from promiscuous and corrupt practices.

Anderson Jonathan has been installed Traditional Authority Thukuta following the death of John Wyson in March this year after serving as a T/A for a year.
