Mzuzu City First Mayor in the Democratic Era Dies

The First Mayor of the City of Mzuzu in the democratic era, Professor Egbard Chibambo has died early hours of Tuesday evening at Mumbwe Private Hospital in the city.

His elder brother Ziliro Chibambo has told us that Egbard died after a long struggle with stroke and high blood pressure.

“Egbard has been sick for some time. Stroke hit him twice and since that time he has not been feeling well,” said Ziliro.

Professor Chibambo was the Mayor of the City from 2002-to 2004.

Mzuzu City Council Spokesperson, Macdonald Gondwe has described the late Egbard as one of the dedicated Mayors the city has had who had exposed Mzuzu to the international world leading to a number of developmental partnerships.

“He championed various developments in the city including the establishment of the famous Zolozolo clinic that serves residents of Katawa,Ching'ambo, Chiputula. He also facilitated coming up with Rafik Foundation which most residents are aware of,” disclosed Gondwe.

The family will announce later when the remains of Professor Egbard Chibambo will be laid to rest, according to Ziliro Chibambo.

Professor Egbard Chibambo hailed from Ekwendeni in Mzimba about 15 kilometers from Mzuzu City.
