Water Contamination Forces BWB to Shut Down Plant

The Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has shut down Mudi Treatment Plant amid complaints that some residents have been receiving contaminated water.

BWB Spokesperson Evelyn Khonje has told Zodiak that the water coloration and unpleasant smell were caused by the huge deposits of organic matter and silt in the dam fueled by cyclone Ana and subsequent downpour.

“When we got the complaints of coloration and odor, we deployed the quality team to investigate and ensure safety of the water,” said Khonje

She explained that with the passage of time, the organic matter started to produce a bad smell consequently affecting the water.

“The Board has intensified water treatment and has shut down the Mudi treatment plant until a long-term solution is found as flushing out of water in the affected tanks is underway. This has affected residents of Limbe, Chinyonga and Kanjedza,” she explained.

Consumer activist John Kapito has since called for an independent body to probe what caused the water contamination.

“Independent organizations like the Malawi Bureau of Standards need to come in and carry out tests on the contaminated water.

“The citizens have the right to know the truth on what really happened unlike shifting the whole blame on cyclone Ana,” said Kapito.
