Ministry of Labour says it finalizing developing the Migration Policy which among others seeks to address issues of human trafficking within and outside the country.

Chief Labour Officer, Francis Kwenda said with children and youths being most vulnerable to trafficking, the document is critical to address drivers of migration.

“Migration is happening each and every day in the country thereby exposing people including children and youths to human trafficking.

We need to have guidelines to tame the vice which is becoming a concern now,” he said.

Kwenda spoke this in Ntcheu when Save the Children was disseminating the results of a 2018 study on child migration to stakeholders in the district.

The study revealed that unsafe migration of children and youths owing to social and economic factors is a cause of worry that needs swift action in the country.

John Chipeta is the organization’s Senior Technical Advisor on Policy, Advocacy, and Government Relations and hopes the study will inform government and other stakeholders to find urgent solutions to the problem.

“We need to step up efforts against unsafe migration. Children have rights to education, health, and protection,” he said.

Save the Children commissioned the child migration study in Dedza, Lilongwe, and Kasungu districts. The idea was to understand the internal migration patterns of children and youths and find solutions to the drivers of the problem.
