MET Predicts Rainfall Decline

The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services says in the next few weeks, southern region will experience a decline in rainfall due to a movement of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) systems towards the central and northern region of the country.

Acting Director for the department, Lucy Mtilatila has told Zodiak this morning, that southern region districts will be receiving isolated rainfall during this period which is a sign of the end of this year's rainy season.

"The rains will soon be declining especially in districts of southern region, and those in the central and northern regions will be receiving heavy rains due to the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) systems that have moved to up the country," said Mtilatila.

Mtilatila has also noted that the chances of development of tropical cyclones on the Indian Ocean are high, but was quick to say "not all cyclones have a possibility of affecting Malawi."

"The condition of the development of tropical cyclones are still favourable on the Indian Ocean, just that the chances of reaching Malawi are minimal," noted Mtilatila.
