Analysts Caution Demonstration Organizers

Political Experts have tipped organizers of anti-government demonstrations in the country to have clear guiding rules and goals in order to sustain people’s trust, warning failure to do so will cause people to shun protests.

Political Science lecturers at Chancellor College Dr. Mustapha Hussain and Clemence Alfazema were commenting on disagreements that have emerged in the Concerned Citizens grouping behind recent protests led by Political Activist Bon Kalindo.

Dr. Hussain lamented that what is happening in the Concerned Citizens group is not good for the country’s democracy, challenging the leaders to be serious.

Said Hussain, “people in authority may take advantage of such divisions to dampen the voices of the voiceless which is not healthy for democracy.”

Alfazema on the other hand said what is happening is a result of clear guidelines for such groups.

“It's something that ought to be defined from the beginning and then agreed upon by the whole group.

What normally is happening in Malawi it looks like that the battles that we launch sometimes it begins with the group but at the end of the day its one man’s interest that get the better of it.” Said Alfazema.

On Friday, Kalindo announced the suspension of all anti-government demonstrations indicating his group wants to allow government time to respond to raised concerns.

But what followed Saturday was a contradiction. Another group emerged faulting Kalindo for not consulting them before making the decision. They canceled Kalindo’s assertions vowing to continue with the protests.
