The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) says it has deployed an interagency assessment team to districts that have been heavily affected by Tropical Cyclone Gombe to help fasten the assessment exercise which district councils are conducting.

DoDMA Public Relations Officer, Chipiliro Khamula, says councils are pre-occupied with exercises to determine damages and finding solutions to problems caused by the previous Tropical Storm Ana.

Khamula said this as a team of DoDMA officials visited several villages in Machinga to assess the damages caused by Tropical Storm Gombe where they have appreciated that the storm has disturbed agriculture activities.

Khamula appreciated works being done by councils to recover effects of the previous Tropical Storm Ana, saying his department has decided to offer a helping hand for a quick execution of the assessments.

"District councils are already doing their assessments so much that we have decided to support them with our interagency assessment team especially in Zomba, Phalombe and Mulanje," said Khamula.

"We have set aside a team of interagency assessment experts to assist the councils for a quick execution of the assessments," he added.

In Machinga, agriculture activities have been heavily affected by the cyclone with rice and maize fields submerged in water especially in the area of Traditional Authority Nchinguza.

One of the rice farmers of Mpiranjara village, Daudi Witness, says they have planted the crop twice in this year's farming season due to the effects of heavy rains and storms.

"We don't know what else to do here as you can see water is all over our farm lands. This is the second time we are planting the rice, but the worse continues to happen," said Witness.
