Possibility Of a Bitter Sweet Relationship Between Chakwera & Chilima?

On Tuesday President Lazarus Chakwera Addressed Malawians where among others he indicated that the Vice President will no longer get delegated duties until the Anti-Corruption Bureau clears him on his alleged involvement in Zuneth Sattars corruption case.

Following the remarks, a political analyst George Phiri says since both the President and Vice committed themselves to fight corruption before coming into power, the President’s decision has nothing to do with their personal relationship.

Said Phiri "In terms of relationship I think it will be good, I find nothing will separate them because both of them in their manifesto they had a appoint that they wanted to end corruption in Malawi."

However, another analyst Victor Chipofya has described the decision as a repetition of what happened to Chilima under the DPP era only that now it has happened under different circumstances.

Chipofya further says not only will this destroy the relationship between the President and his vice, but also shake the foundation of Tonse alliance.

"If the President has said that he has taken away all the delegated responsibility, it technically means that the President has suspended the Vice president. So obviously that is going to bring a sour relationship among the two," said Chipofya.

Another political analyst Joseph Chunga says the decision comes amidst the principle to fight corruption and as such the relationship will depend on the reaction of the Vice President.

Said Chipofya "The President should be showing the nation that this is not about a certain individual its about the principle of fighting corruption at any government structure. In terms of the relationship, it will depend on how the vice president will take this."

When contacted for Spokesperson for the Vice President Pilirani Phiri said Saulos Chilima will comment on the matter at an opportune time.
