22-year-old Jescar Mponda will represent Malawi at this year’s Miss East Africa beauty pageant to be held in Dar es Salaam Tanzania on December 9.

A fourth-year student in Business Administration at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), Jescar came top in rigorous local auditions to secure the spot at the regional showpiece.

She told Zodiak online that she is confident and ready for her first major pageant.

“I want people to understand that miss east Africa is more than just a crown, but a platform to inspire beauty and advocate issues to make life in the region and Africa as a whole, better,” She said.

Jescar’s manager Florence Banda, a former Miss Matofotofo, has told Zodiak Online that she will leave for Dar Es Salaam Friday, December 26 for camp before the finals on December 9.

The annual regional event was first held in 1996 in Tanzania but there were no contests since then due to a number of factors.

This year’s return event is being organized by Rena Events Limited who says in a statement “the non-bikini event is unique and will aim to instill authentic African values that create a distinctive sense of belonging”.

Coordinator of the event Daxx Cruz adds that this year’s event will attract 16 beauties from 16 countries namely Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Seychelles, Somalia, Reunion, Djibouti, Comoro, Madagascar, Mauritius, Eritrea, and South Sudan.

She said contestants will be accorded a safe treatment and environment in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The winner of the competition will cart home a brand new Nissan Xtrail (2021) worth over 40 000 USD and a monthly pay of 1500 USD.

The first runner up will receive 5000 Dollars while 2nd runner up will go away with 3000 USD.
