Dr. Chilima Happy With Rumphi District Council Disaster Risk Management

Vice president Dr. Saulos Chilima has expressed satisfaction with the efforts the Rumphi district council is doing towards disaster risk management.

Dr. Chilima said this yesterday Tuesday, after inspecting the construction works of a Dyke and community-based floods early warning systems at Mlowe in the district.

All disaster-prone councils were advised to pick on disaster risk management as an area that they should focus on because the country is losing lives and property, advised Dr. Chilima.

"As part of reforms government asked all disaster-prone councils to work on disaster risk management, and this is what government wants," said the Vice president.

He further encouraged the council and communities to work on environmental management such as tree regeneration in all disaster-prone areas.

Commenting on reforms the district is doing, Chilima commended the district but advised to promote them.

District commissioner for Rumphi, Emmanuel Bulukutu told the Vice president that the construction of a Dyke in the area and the community-based floods early warning systems will save lives and property during disasters.

"With the new technology in the district, we expect to save people's lives and property, explained the district commissioner"

Some of the reforms the district highlighted is the introduction of e-ticketing in revenue collection, increasing agriculture production and Agro-processing, promote tourism and urban development.
