CSOs Chase Away State Media

In a clear violation of freedom of the press, Civil Society Organizations in Malawi on Tuesday chased away journalists from the state media who had come to cover a news conference.

The civil society leaders were addressing reporters on the arrest of prominent lawyer Ralph Kasambara whom the law enforcers charged with abetting assault after his guards overpowered two men suspected to have been sent to petrol bomb his offices.

Acting National Coordinator of Human Rights Consultative Committee, Reverend MacDonald Sembereka confirmed barring the state media from covering the news conference.

“Yes we chased them away and we will continue doing this until they change their style of reporting. Every time they cover us they twist things and do propaganda,” complained Sembereka.

Commenting on the development, Media Institute of Southern Africa – Malawi Chapter Chairperson Anthony Kasunda condemned the act but also appealed to the state media to be impartial in their reporting.

“We condemn the act by the civil society organizations because what they did is an attack on the media but at the same time we appeal to the state media to be impartial in their reporting,” said Kasunda.—Zodiak Online
