Probe on Lawyers Not Political, Says ACB
Malawi’s Anti Corruption Bureau has said investigations into how lawyers for Mr. Ralph Kasambara obtained court bail is not political, the bureau’s director Mr. Alexius Nampota has said.
Mr. Nampota told a news conference ion Blantyre on Friday that for some time the graft busting body has been closely monitoring the suspected corrupt relationship between Mr. Kasambara and Magistrates as well as Judges.
“This time we wonder how his lawyers had to go to a magistrate to get a bail bond when in the normal procedure a magistrate does not have a jurisdiction to determine bail issues outside a normal court session,” said Mr. Nampota
“With the court workers on strike the bureau wants to ascertain the criteria that the lawyers used to obtain a court bail when there are many people who are detained by the police failing to do so,” he said further.
He said even if it were not for the recent developments ACB would still have launched investigations on Mr. Kasambara because of his past conduct.
He told the media that Mr. Kasambara is alleged to have been corrupting judicial officers thereby raising questions on how he managed to obtain a court bail when the courts are closed.
The bureau has since summoned lawyers Wapona Kita and Jonathan Kara to appear before the bureau.—Zodiak Online
