Girl Empowerment Key to Fighting Poverty
BLANTYRE: Action aid says girl empowerment is the key to unlock the poverty circus in the country.
Action Aid Programme Coordinator for Nsanje Mr. Landani Masingati made the observation at the close of a two day girl’s conference for the southern region in Blantyre on Tuesday.
He said as a measure of reversing the current trend of poverty, there is a need for encouraging girls to pursue education.
Aged 18 years, Maria Fernando will not forget two years ago when she fall pregnant while in STD 7.
Her father working for Asians in Limbe chased away to his home village in Chiradzulu.
She recounts that after the delivery of the baby parents and guardians encouraged her to go back to school but she vehemently denied.
Action aid through its programmes of encouraging girls to go to school persuaded the girl to start learning again.
Program coordinator for the organization Nsanje said some challenges being faced in the country emanates from illiteracy amongst girls.
He said there are some girls who are serious to re-draft their life journey by Priotizing School.
45 girls shared experiences and encouraged each other on the importance of going to school.
