Mejn Reviews Malawi Economy 2011

As evaluations for the year 2011 continue to trickle in, economic think tank Malawi Economic Justice Network says the year has been the worst in history in the country. This only echoes a string of other similar sentiment from civil society.

In a statement MEJN says failure by donors to disburse budget support coupled with shortage of forex and fuel has dealt Malawians a heavy blow.

As evaluations for the year 2011 continue, Economic think tank Malawi Economic Justice Network says economically it has been the worst in history.

In a statement MEJN says failure by donors to disburse budget support coupled with shortage of forex and fuel has dealt Malawians a heavy blow.

MEJN has also noted that these problems culminated into rising cost of living hurting most Malawians.

The statement adds that though political in nature, Malawi’s diplomatic standoffs with some of her partners especially Britain has affected the economy.

Overall the economy in Malawi saw a drop from 7 to 6 percent.

But MJN’s executive Director Dalitso kubalasa urges authorities to take measures in addressing the challenges if 2012 should be anything to smile about.

“Hope is there and has always been there. Our problem is what to do to realize it,” he says

The organization has however hailed improvements in infrastructure development, mining, and tourism industry.
