MCP Grabs Phoya as It Fires Daza
It is now official. Former minister of justice in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has announced joining the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
The announcement was made at a press conference the MCP held in Lilongwe at the residence of the MCP president Mr. John Tembo January 10.
Mr. Phoya is a legislator for Blantyre Rural East constituency.
The former DPP minister, who was among senior officials of the party, fell out of favor with the DPP on whose ticket he secured a parliamentary seat.
Mr. Phoya was fired from the DPP for refusing to defend an unpopular bill on injunctions in parliament which, he believes, was a serious infringement on people’s right to accessing justice.
The bill sought to broke citizens from obtaining court injunctions against government.
Mr. Phoya is a lawyer by profession.
The MCP is soul searching with regard to who shall be its torch bearer in presidential elections in 2014.
The lone individual who has expressed interest in representing the party in 2014 Secretary General Dr. Christopher Daza is already in conflict with current leadership which is evidently broking his way.
The MCP has also fired Dr. Daza. - Zodiak Online
