Teargas Collapses Three Children
LILONGWE: Three children allegedly collapsed from the effects of teargas on Monday as police dispersed people in some townships within Malawi’s capital of Lilongwe where the police and informal traders were engaged in running battles.
The ugly scenes came on the expiry of a weeklong ultimatum to evict the street vendors amid accusations of theft and stripping naked women putting on trousers recently.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested over 30 people charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace and breaking offences.
This came after some vendors vowed to stop their colleagues from plying their trade in the streets by the week ending February 6.
By lunch hour calm had returned to the streets but the law enforcers were still manning the streets as tensions kept running high.
Our reporter on the scene, Emmanuel Chibwana, said the men in uniform this time around demonstrated a high level of professionalism compared to similar exercises in the past where scores of people were injured or killed with stray bullets.—Zodiak Online
