If you have been doubting reports that Malawi has an acute shortage of health personnel then this is the story is for you:
A 70 year old nurse cum midwife, the only health personnel at Dzindevu health center in Dedza district, delivers about six pregnancies every day alone making her work the entire day.
The health centre has a catchment area of close to 30 thousand people.
The granny midwife, Eliza Moleni, has since sounded an SOS to health authorities for additional nurses at the facility to save lives.
“I’ve been a nurse here for three years. There is just too much work here. The problem is that there are no houses to accommodate additional staff,” said Moleni
Dedza District Health officer Mrs. Bessie Phiri says the ministry of health has provided the district with new qualified nurses and arrangements are in progress to send an additional nurse to Dzindevu.
At the time zodiak online arrived at the health centre, Mrs. Moleni was resting after working all night delivering pregnant mothers.
“I deliver five to six women every day. I work 24 hours. I wish we were two of us so we could be working on shift,’ she says sounding frail
Apart from a single nurse, the facility has a medical assistant and a senior Health surveillance assistant.—Zodiak Online
