Is Govt Broke or Not?
Some Malawi’s Civil Society Organizations have demanded government to come clean to say whether or not it has money to adjust upwards salaries of judiciary workers on strike for a month now.
The employees are demanding salary increment as approved by parliament in 2006.
Addressing journalists in Blantyre on Thursday, the Civil Society Organizations said they expected President Bingu wa Mutharika to touch on the subject in his parliament address last Friday to say whether the executive has money or not.
“If the executive feels it cannot afford to pay the judiciary workers because it has no money it must come clean and say that,” said civil rights activist Ken Williams Mhango.
Executive Director for Malawi Watch Mr. Billy Banda appealed to President Mutharika to consult widely and take a leading role to end the strike.
Meanwhile, Minister of Justice Ephraim Chiume on Thursday told parliament that the strike will be resolved soon because “negotiations are at an advanced stage”.—Zodiak Online
