CSOs Pullout of Peace Talks, Demand Kasambara Release

Civil Society Organizations have pulled out of the UN-mediated peace talks with government demanding the immediate release of lawyer Ralph Kasambara.

Leader of the Civil Society Organizations Dialogue Team, Mr. Voice Mhone said this during a press briefing held in Lilongwe this morning.

“We announce our withdrawal from the talks unless the Malawi government releases Mr. Kasambara who is in detention without trial,” said Mr. Mhone

The talks were initially scheduled to resume on Friday, February 17, 2012 in Lilongwe, five months after a deadlock.

The talks were called in 2011 after the deadly 20 July protests which led to the deaths of 20 protesters.—Zodiak Online
