Am Not Life President, Says Bingu

President Bingu wa Mutharika has said he is not Malawi’s life President and will happily retire when his presidential ruling mandate expires in 2014.

The President’s remarks come at a time when the rumor mill has it that some people within the ruling party wants to amend the constitution to allow President Mutharika go for a third term.

But speaking when he presided over a graduation ceremony at Domasi Teachers Training college in Zomba, the President assured that he will happily retire in 2014.

“I am not the life President of Malawi. I will happily retire in 2014 and go home. I needed to make this clarification before the Nation (Newspaper) and Zodiak (Broadcasting Station) writes that I have declared myself life President,” said the President whose brother, Peter Mutharika, has already been handpicked to lead the ruling party in 2014 elections.

Malawi laws bar incumbent Presidents from a third term after their two five-year terms.

In 2002, former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi attempted to amend the constitution to have an open ended presidential tenure but the bill, dubbed Open Term, failed by three votes when it was tabled in parliament on July 4, 2002.

Later, Dr. Muluzi changed the bid to third term but it did materialize and was not even re-tabled in parliament.—Zodiak Online

Amuna ku ulaya, sorry for the insult anyway. However, reporters need to be well informed of every change and they should not work on assumptions but realities. You have also just made a wrong assumption that I was trained at this institution. You see, another problem.

Zisakunyase mochaveh. Thats the reality. Had you wanted to come from a reputable name, then you would have been trained to these institutions with good names. Dont be hurt by just a name. What matter is what you are capable of doing through the trainings you got from the institution. Am really sorry for you and would rather love if you retract your insult on the reporter. Learn to be professional man.

When will the dull Malawian reporters learn that there is no Domasi Teachers College in Malawi. The name changed long time ago in 1990's to Domasi College of Education, when it's mandate was elevated from training primary school teachers at certificate level to training of Secondary School Teachers and Teacher Training College lecturers at diploma and degree levels. Zimandinyasa bwanji, Mxiii!
