Am Not Life President, Says Bingu
President Bingu wa Mutharika has said he is not Malawi’s life President and will happily retire when his presidential ruling mandate expires in 2014.
The President’s remarks come at a time when the rumor mill has it that some people within the ruling party wants to amend the constitution to allow President Mutharika go for a third term.
But speaking when he presided over a graduation ceremony at Domasi Teachers Training college in Zomba, the President assured that he will happily retire in 2014.
“I am not the life President of Malawi. I will happily retire in 2014 and go home. I needed to make this clarification before the Nation (Newspaper) and Zodiak (Broadcasting Station) writes that I have declared myself life President,” said the President whose brother, Peter Mutharika, has already been handpicked to lead the ruling party in 2014 elections.
Malawi laws bar incumbent Presidents from a third term after their two five-year terms.
In 2002, former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi attempted to amend the constitution to have an open ended presidential tenure but the bill, dubbed Open Term, failed by three votes when it was tabled in parliament on July 4, 2002.
