MK59 Million for Yedef Equipment
LILONGWE: It has been revealed that warehouse charges for the equipment meant to benefit youths in the Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDEF) have risen to over MK59 million.
Member of Parliament for Thyolo Thava Mr. Linfred Nawena revealed this on Wednesday night during a national dialogue meeting on YEDEF governance. The equipment is currently lying idle in Lilongwe two years after procurement.
Director of Youth Enterprise Development in the Ministry of Sports, youth development and welfare Mr. Harrison Mandindi refused to discuss the matter arguing the Malawi Rural Development Fund Officials were better placed.
It was unanimously agreed during the national dialogue meeting on Youth Enterprise Development Fund YEDEF that the fund is an important component for the development of the youth in the country.
However, delegates felt the rollout exposed teething problems which must be ironed out to ensure its success. Among others, delegates advised against pre-procurement of equipment before beneficiary identification. - Zodiak Online
