Project Innovation Centre (PIC) has embarked on a programme to train young entrepreneurs in manufacturing industry.

PIC Chief Executive Officer, Kondwani Kachamba Ngwira, says they want the young entrepreneurs to produce products of high standards.

“We have PIC members that are into production of soap, beverages, perfumes etc. we want them to start manufacturing according to standards.

“We have brought colleagues from Malawi Bureau of Standards, TEVETA, Women Lawyers Association and National Development Bank. These are development partners that play different kinds of roles,” says Kachamba.

Kachamba says they are eyeing filling gaps of unemployment and import tendency among other objectives.

“As a nation we don’t love manufacturing so you will see that small things that can easily be manufactured in the country is being imported. Things like tooth picks.

“It doesn’t make sense as a nation importing tooth picks. We have discovered that products manufactured in SADC use raw materials from Malawi.

“We have been selling them in raw form and at cheap prices and they process them and sell them back to us at higher prices. We need to invest in value addition,” he said.

Kachamba says Malawi is a peaceful country which he says is a greatest resource for innovation and entrepreneurship and must be used to the fullest.

The training started last week on Friday in Blantyre and it will be spread in all the regions of the country.
