SADC, MRA Launch E Certificate of Origin

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) say the newly introduced electronic certificate of origin will alleviate challenges that have been hampering the flourishing of business transactions in the region.

SADC Director Finance and Customs, Sadwick Mtonakutha told journalists in Blantyre on Wednesday that the initiative that will be rolled to all 14 countries by 2024 will assist to curb counterfeits activities.

“The new SADC electronic certificate of origin will therefore improve the way we conduct business in the region. This is because the challenges that were associated with the manual processing of the certificate will no longer be the order of the day,” he said.

MRA Commissioner General, John Biziwick is optimistic that the electronic certificates will spur economic development in Malawi.

Biziwick says they will make sure that all borders have access to powerful technology for ease access of digital certificate.

“We will engage the chamber of commerce so that their offices should have access to technology to allow importers have ease access to e-certificates on the importers side,” Biziwick said.

Currently, the electronic certificate initiative is being piloted in Zambia, Eswatini and Malawi.
