MACRA Lifts Ban on Licences

Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has lifted a moratorium on issuance of radio licences in the FM band.

Director of broadcasting, Fergus Lipenga, made the announcement on Wednesday in Blantyre during a news conference.

"Last year MACRA suspended the issuance of radio frequency licences in the FM Band to allow for re-planning of the Band which had become congested and could not accommodate additional radio stations." said Lipenga.

But the new addition to the spectrum has its own repercussions.

According to Lipenga, some radio station will be required to switch off transmitters in designated areas among other recommendations.

"...some broadcasters will be re-assigned new frequencies; others will be required to reduce transmitting power to avoid interference," Lipenga announced.

Patrick Musiyapo, Deputy Director of Spectrum Management at MACRA, could not disclose how wide the bandwidth is after frequency re-planning.
