MRA Collecting Less in Revenue Amid COVID-19, Two Officers Resume Work From Self-Isolation

Two Malawi Revenue Authority officers at Songwe Border post in Karonga are back to work from self isolation after coming in contact with some COVID-19 suspected cases.

Director of Corporate Affairs at MRA Steve Kapoloma confirmed the development in an interview with Zodiak Saturday.

"I can confirm that we had two members on self isolation but are now back to work," said Kapoloma.

Kapoloma adds that that the global pandemic has affected the country’s revenue base due to slow importation of goods and services.

Meanwhile the Malawi Red Cross Society is on a campaign supporting the Ministry of Health in screening of people at Songwe border post as well as Karonga District Hospital.

Communications and Humanitarian Diplomacy Specialist for Felix Washoni notes that a lot of people are not complying with Coronavirus preventive measures.

He says his organization is baffled to see that people in the district are not observing social distance and the use of face masks to avoid catching the virus saying the district taskforce on COVID-19 has  duty of intensify sensitization campaigns to the grassroots for the citizenry to embrace the measures.

"All sectors should comply with the guidelines set by government if the fight against the deadly Coronavirus is to be won," said Washoni.

On his part, Officer In-charge for the Department of Immigration at Songwe Border post Richard Chidwala said the law enforcement institution will soon engage their Tanzania counterpart to make sure that people entering the country are checked and screened.

"As Immigration we have put in place several measures that travelers from hotspot countries are thoroughly screened to contain further spread of the pandemic,” says Chidwala.

Malawi Red Cross Society has so far trained over 5,000 volunteers out of 75,000 volunteers it has across the country as a way of beefing up its on COVID-19 response team`.
