Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara has asked the Malawi Electoral Commission to consider dividing Mzimba North East Constituency into two saying governments funding for the constituency, for example, the 30 million kwacha constituency development fund is inadequate for the area due to its vastness.

The speaker, who is Member of Parliament for the area was speaking Saturday after Matuli Community Development Organization donated various items to Matuli Health Centre in Mzimba.

Hara says the vastness of the area has affected development projects such as electrification, water connectivity, road construction as well as delivery of proper health assistance, where resource allocation has become a challenge.

The speaker feels if Malawi Electoral Commission divided the constituency in question, the 30 million kwacha constituency development fund will be able to deal with most of the problems people Mzimba North East constituency are facing.

“This constituency is one of the biggest, hence my plea for the Malawi Electoral Commission to consider us in terms of demarcating the constituency,” said Hara.

Nurse in Charge at Matuli Health Centre Fanny Mbuzi concurred with Hara saying the health center is currently facing a number of problems that need immediate assistance.

“The main challenge is about electricity, we have solar panels but we don’t have batteries, there is one borehole which is used by the community and patients in the hospital,” said Mbuzi.

Chairperson for Matuli Community Development Organization Stanley Nyirenda says the organization was established to help in dealing with problems as such.

“The group’s main objective is to facilitate development in Matuli area with education, health, natural resource management, and agriculture as our main areas of focus,” explained Nyirenda.
