UTM Suspends its Regional Secretary for the North Over Immigration Court Case

UTM has with immediate effect suspended its regional secretary for the north Jane Mbale on allegations that she used a party vehicle to smuggle three illegal immigrants from Karonga going towards Mzuzu, last week.

Spokesperson for the party Frank Mwenifumbo has confirmed the development saying the conduct of Mbale was against a provision in the UTM constitution on discipline.

`` I don’t want to comment further. But, what I can say right now is that the disciplinary committee of the party has indeed suspended honorable Mbale pending verdict of the court on an immigration-related case she is answering, ’’ said Mwenifumbo in an interview.

UTM's decision to suspend its regional secretary for the north, Jane Mbale comes a week after she was arrested in Karonga on allegations that she was trafficking three illegal immigrants from Karonga going towards Mzuzu, using a party vehicle.

Mbale and an unidentified person who were together on the day of committing the offense are currently answering charges of aiding and abetting illegal immigrants at Karonga magistrate court.

University of Malawi political analyst George Chaima has hailed the discussion saying other parties should emulate the direction of disciplining their followers once they are against their own constitutions.

Said Chaima: ``This is how political parties must handle disciplinary issues with their followers. It is my belief that other political parties will emulate this from UTM.”

Meanwhile, the UTM vehicle which is alleged to have carried the illegal immigrants is still being kept at Karonga Police station.
