Mzuzu Central Hospital Suspends All Minor Surgical operations

Authorities at Mzuzu Central Hospital have suspended conducting all minor surgical operations owing it to the limited availability of oxygen gas used for the medical procedures.

Director of the hospital Dr. Frank Sinyiza has confirmed the development in a telephone interview saying, for now, they are only concentrating on urgent and emergency cases until the status of the availability of Gas which Ministry of Health is sorting out, improves.

``I cannot say when we will resume conducting the suspended services. It will depend on how soon the Ministry of Health handles the issue of Oxygen Gas with the suppliers,” said Dr. Sinyiza.

The hospital stopped conducting surgical operations on some minor medical problems on Monday this week, and those seeking for such services have been put on the pending list.

Zodiak online has also been informed that the hospital has some unsettled debt with the supplier of the Gas who has, in turn, held up supply, and Ministry of Health is currently handling the matter.

Meanwhile, Director of Health at the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia Mphatso Ngulube Kumbweza has noted with concern the recent lapses in the Ministry's handling of essential services delivery.

Said Ngulube Kumbweza: ``Government should quickly resolve the matter with the Supplier so that those on the waiting list can be operated on.”

Mzuzu Central Hospital is one of the referral hospitals in the country without an oxygen plant, but we understand that government is planning to erect one soon.
