Synod of Livingstonia Bans Congregants From Traveling to Zambia
The CCAP Synod of Livingstonia has banned its local congregants from traveling to Zambia for church activities amid rising cases of Cholera in that country which has claimed the lives of more than 400 people in a space of three months.
General Secretary of the Synod Reverend William Tembo has told us in an interview that the Church has also called on congregations in border areas with Zambia to take precautionary measures when preparing food during church activities.
The Church has also advised its followers that boarder the Eastern part of Zambia including Lundazi which is very close to Malawi to take precautionary measures when handling their foodstuffs. "We don’t want to be part of the people who can import the disease."
Reverend Mwale has told us that they are in contact with the CCAP Synod of Zambia who are providing daily updates on the Cholera status in the neighboring country.
Local members of CCAP Synod of Livingstonia often go to celebrate religious activities with congregants of the CCAP Synod of Zambia where the Cholera outbreak which started in October last year has killed about 400 people and infected 10,000 others.
Mzuzu University-based health expert Dr. Griphin Chirambo has however noted that travel bans alone cannot work without imploring hygiene practices.
Said Dr. Chirambo: "Issues of hygiene should top the list of things that need to be done to prevent this pandemic in the country.”
Following a surge in the Cholera outbreak last year, the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia also banned the cooking of food during its church activities as a measure to contain the further spread of the disease which killed 1,700 people in Malawi.
