MISEREOR, a grouping of German Bishops has given the Catholic Commission of Justice and Peace (CCJP) of Dedza Diocese 161 Million Kwacha for the next three years to fight against gender inequalities and domestic violence in Ntcheu and Dedza districts.

Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for Dedza CCJP, Felistas Chiuye told Zodiak Online that annually, the diocese document six cases concerning women's rights violations and are handled by formal justice systems hence the financial support.

"Malawi is still having challenges to achieve gender equality. Strong traditional cultural values, practices, and beliefs are unjust to women and children especially girls thereby violating their rights," Chiuye said.

Ntcheu District Gender Officer, Phalles Chizule says poor financial background among women and girls exposes them to abuses in the country.

"Women continue to be subjected to abuses in the country due to poor financial background. We believe steps taken by CCJP are timely to address the vice," Chizule said.

In Ntcheu, Dedza CCJP will work in two Traditional Authorities (T/A's) Ganya and Champiti while in Dedza it targets T/A Chilikumwendo.
