MERA Board Member, Pempho Likongwe Resign

Counsel Pempho Likongwe confirmed to us that he has stepped down from the MERA board.

In a letter addressed to the Comptroller of Statutory Corporations and copied to MERA Chairperson, Public Appointments Committee of Parliament, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, and MERA Company Secretary, Likongwe cites the advice that he offered to Richard Chapweteka to take up his appointment as MEC Commissioner.

Likongwe in the letter admits that he indeed gave friendly advice to Chapweteka, who had applied for the position of MERA CEO to accept the commissioner post because he was not successful in the MERA interviews.

But he says he was frustrated that Chapweteka reported the matter to the Ombudsman and claims he included lies in his report.

Meanwhile, Centre for Human Rights Rehabilitation Executive Director Micheal Kaiyatsa says the developments call for a thorough investigation.

“Much as he does not want to be associated with this issue, it shows that there was indeed some fraughted processes in the whole recruitment process,” said Kaiyasa.

Last week, Ombudsman Grace Malera was stopped from releasing a report on an investigation into the recruitment of Henry Kachaje as MERA CEO.

But a report which has been making rounds on social media faults the recruitment process citing irregularities amid reports that Kachaje was not qualified for the position.
