E-learning Key in Education Delivery - Nyalonje

Minister of Education Agness Nyalonje says her ministry is laying a foundation that in future education should not only be delivered face to face but also online.

She was speaking in Nkhotakota on Monday during the launch of Connect a School, an internet connectivity programme which she said will promote e-learning amidst Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Nyalonje, the initiative is part of her ministry`s strategic objective to digitize education and expand access to quality education through internet connectivity and digitization.

Nyalonje said if the country is to achieve Malawi 2063 development agenda and develop into a middle-income country; it needs to educate more students to MSCE and degree levels.

“We must work to ensure that all students, wherever they come from, whatever the income levels of their families whether or not they are disabled, whether they are boys or girls are given are equal chance of succeeding,” she said.

Head teacher for Nkhotakota Secondary School, MacGiven Chinyamula said the development will help students access quality education even when a teacher is away.

Stella Senti, Chief Operating Officer for Open Connect Limited, an organisation behind the innovation, said to address internet down time challenges in the country, their system is also connected to internet from neighbors where they can easily switch to.

Three secondary schools; Nkhotakota, Chitipa and Mulunguzi in Zomba have benefited in the first phase of the project with many others expecting to get connected soon.

Government needs about K70 billion to make available internet services to students in all secondary schools in the country.
