MRCS Set K51 Million For NU & BLK Storm Ana Survivors

Malawi Red Cross Society - MRCS says has set aside 51 Million Kwacha towards cash transfers to at least 771 families affected by recent Tropical Storm Ana in two districts of Ntcheu and Balaka to reconstruct homes and build resilience.

Speaking to Zodiak Online in Ntcheu where 620 families are opting to benefit, MRCS President Innocent Majiya cautioned survivors to always be alert with the weather forecast arguing it is a precautionary measure to mitigate effects of the same.

“The transfer levels to each benefiting family is ranging between 60 to 75 thousand kwacha depending on damages caused by the storm,” Majiya said, adding the amount will help lessen survivors suffering in the course of the disaster.

Dyna Dickson of Eneya Village, described the support as timely as the family of nine is currently living in a kitchen after their house collapsed.

“On a fateful day, we woke up in the middle of the night due to the disaster that completely damaged our house living us with nothing in the process,” Dickson said.

Meanwhile, Ntcheu District Council Chairperson, Joshua Kwachera hopes the support will assist the survivors accordingly considering many lost valuables during the disaster.

“The storm was severe as many families were affected in the district. With the aid of government and other partners, we are helping the affected people to build their resilience,” Kwachera said.

In Ntcheu, the Tropical Storm Ana killed two people, 28 others were left with injuries and at least 7 thousand households are destitute.
