Over 100 children in the area of Group Village Headman (GVH) Kumwandama in Lilongwe are privileged to have access to quality early childhood education, thanks to a Malawian couple based in America.

GVH Kumwandama says Owen and Vanessa Kachaje visited a local church in 2015 where they donated some items, and the people in the area took advantage of the visit to ask for a nursery school.

The chief says the couple responded positively, and Reach the Needy Daycare and Nursery Center opened in 2018.

"Under-five children who have gone through the facility over the past three years have proved to be sharp and different from the rest when they enroll in the primary school.

"However, we ask other well-wishers to join Owen and Vanessa in assisting us with a primary school as the children face more challenges to travel to Kachitsa Primary School which is at a distance of more than 10 kilometers," said GVH Kumwandama.

He said he has plans to mobilize all village heads under his leadership to assist in providing a piece of land for a primary school.

Head caregiver for Reach the Needy Agness Mlomo says the facility, however, lacks some teaching and learning material and asked other people of good will to join the couple.

She said: "It is encouraging to get reports that our products outshine others who start primary school without early childhood development and with more support, the future looks promising."

In a joint interview with Zodiak Online, Owen and Vanessa Kachaje have assured the community of more support.

"We are happy that we can reach out to some impoverished children in this area, especially orphans and young girls, on our mission to transform rural communities by providing them with education, healthcare, and basic needs," they said.

Owen and Vanessa say have plans to construct an under-five clinic at the school and later a health center or a community hospital to provide easy and immediate access to health care if they are given the land.

The couple says other well-wishers are welcome to support their nonprofit organization with meals, uniforms, teaching and learning materials, or infrastructure for the proposed primary school and clinic.
